INTRODUCTION Sustainable clothing is often presented as a moral alternative to conventional fashion, but building a profitable sustainable clothing business requires more than replacing one fabric with another. The real challenge is designing a product whose environmental considerations, manufacturing process, customer appeal and financial model reinforce one another. A garment can be made from a preferred material and still become commercially inefficient if it has excessive fabric waste, requires complicated manufacturing, moves slowly through inventory or cannot command a price that covers its true production cost. Sustainability therefore needs to be treated as a design and business constraint , not simply as a marketing adjective attached to a finished product. I would approach the business through what I call the Circular Margin Model : Demand → Design → Material → Production → Use → Recovery → Margin . Demand determines what should be made.
